Michelangelo: Architecture as Anatomy Exhibition

Michelangelo: Architecture as Anatomy consists of drawings, archival pages, and engravings on loan from the finest collection of Michelangelo drawings and his ancestral home, the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, Italy. Combined with Old Master drawings from the collection of the Museum, the exhibition depicts and illustrates Michelangelos concept and philosophy that architecture was anatomical in a way that has never been done before. The exhibition explores new research in Michelangelo architectural studies, includes digital reconstructions of buildings never before believed to be influenced by Michelangelo, and lectures by world-renowned scholars on Michelangelo.

The first exhibit in Virginia of works by master illustrator and artist Charley Harper (1922 - 2007) is at the VLM through April 25. The exhibit is centered around the personal collection of museum Executive Director Page Hayhurst and her family. It also includes student artwork and interactive art activities in Harpers style (tangrams, large puzzles, alphabet art table and rubbing stations). Harper was best known for his highly stylized wildlife depictions in "minimal realism," capturing the essence of his subjects with the fewest possible visual elements. Included in museum admission. Museum hours 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, NOON-5 p.m. Sundays.

Wonder Women of Shirley - Womens History Month at Shirley Plantation

Shirley Plantation
Long before the age of suffragettes and the Equal Rights Amendment, the women of Shirley were making a name for themselves in a mans world. In conjunction with the National Womens History Projects theme for Womens History Month, Writing Women Back into History, Shirley Plantation will host our own Wonder Women of Shirley. During the month of March thematic tours will emphasize the role of women in Shirleys history and how they helped protect and preserve the family and estate through eleven generations. These women have been instrumental in shaping almost 400 years of history here at Shirley Plantation. Shirley is located on Scenic Route 5, 35 miles outside of Williamsburg.

Learn ways to help the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling waste. Several environmental organizations will have displays and information about conservation measures. There will also be crafts for kids, eco-friendly giveaways, thousands of native plants for sale and special earth-friendly animal shows.

The VLMs horticulture staff holds this annual sale as a fundraiser, but the real goal is to introduce the gardening public to the incredible variety of native plants that do well in the landscape, and to educate them about those which are better left in the wild.
