The Museum, built entirely with private funds, was completed in 1983, and underwent a major building construction and remodeling project in 1987 which resulted in a facility twice the original size. This expansion has provided space for an enhanced exhibition program and a graphic arts study room which has allowed greater access to the Museum's large collection of prints, drawings, and photographs. College students, members of the public, special interest groups, and preschool through high school students are among the many who visit the Museum and enjoy its programs.
The permanent collection is supplemented by numerous special exhibitions that bring together works of art from public and private collections in other parts of the United States and the world. These exhibitions provide opportunities for the viewing and study of related material not otherwise accessible in this area. The Museum also sponsors the American Drawing Biennial, a national competitive juried exhibition.
Numerous educational opportunities are offered throughout the year in conjunction with the exhibitions. These include lectures, gallery talks, demonstrations, workshops, and family programs. The Museum also offers a docent training program, a variety of art classes for children, and guided tours for school, adult, and special interest groups.
